Frequently Asked Questions

I have applied for a new driving licence: how long until I receive it from the DVLA?
Once you submit your pre-filled and error-checked application to the DVLA you can expect your licence in 3 weeks. The delay could, however, be longer if the DVLA performs additional checks on your personal details or health information

I have changed or renewed my licence: can I drive while it is being processed and before I receive it?
Yes, as long as: you have held a UK (or other exchangeable) licence since January 1976, you are not disqualified for driving for any reason (including medical), you would not now be refused a licence for medical reasons, you keep to any other specific requirements / conditions of your licence

I need to change my details (photo and/or name): can I do this online?
Yes, as long as: you have your valid UK licence, you are a UK resident, you are not prevented from driving for any reason, you have proof of residence dating back 3 years. If your photo is close to expiry, please make sure to change it before the expiration date in order to avoid potentially hefty fines from the DVLA (go to section 4b of your licence to check the expiration date)

I want to apply for a provisional licence: can I do this online?
Yes, as long as: this is your first provisional licence application, you are a UK resident, you are not prevented from driving for any reason, you have valid proof of identity, you have proof of residence dating back 3 years

I have lost my licence, or my licence has been stolen: what do I do?
You will need to replace your licence – please see below ‘I want to replace my full or provisional licence’ for details

I want to replace my (full or provisional) licence: what conditions do I need to fulfill?
You can replace your licence if: you have lost your licence, your licence has been defaced, destroyed or stolen, you are a UK resident, you are not prevented from driving for any reason, you have valid proof of identity, you have proof of residence dating back 3 years. Please also use this opportunity to update any relevant address, name or photo changes to ensure you comply with DVLA requirements

What fees will I have to pay to the DVLA on top of the fee for Driving Licence Online’s services?
Once you receive your completed and error-checked form from us, and in order to process your application in full, the DVLA will charge:
- £50: for a first provisional licence
-£20: for a lost/stolen/defaced/destroyed licence; to exchange of a paper licence for a photocard licence; to remove expired endorsements; to renew an expired photocard
-Free: change of name and/or address
Note, if you are submitting a new photo with your application, you will not be charged an additional fee unless it is with a change or name and/or address (in which case you will then be charged £20)

I am sending my identity documents to the DVLA, should I use a secure delivery service?
This is recommended in order for you to track your package. Include a pre-stamped self-addressed envelope to ensure your identity documents are also returned by secure mail. Note, your identity documents will be returned separately from your licence

What kind of photo can I use?
It is very important that you use a regulation photograph, showing your full head, in colour and against a white background. The photo must be 45mm high, and 35 mm wide (with your head between 29mm and 34 mm high within this)

I am a resident of Northern Ireland: can you process my application?
Unfortunately we are not able to process your application, but are working to provide this service to residents of Northern Ireland in the future

I am not currently resident in the UK: can I apply for a licence?
No. You must be resident in the UK to obtain a UK driving licence
